The Flamenco Cajón, or Box Drum, has been growing in popularity over the past two decades, with Paco de Lucia generally given credit for having introduced it to the Flamenco world. It originated in Peru but with a sister instrument of the same name also popular in Cuba.
The Cajón is used to mark and underpin the key rhythms of the Flamenco musical forms with some of the best instruments having front panels with the corners left free in order to increase the variety of sounds that can be created. It is played by skilful striking with the hands in various positions, often using the heel of one foot as additional control over the sonorities produced. Guitar strings are fixed to the inside of the sounding plate of the Flamenco Cajón to resonate and make a sound similar to that of a snare.
Sandra La Espuelita plays the Cajón both in performance and when teaching in London as an exciting adjunct to the Flamenco rhythms being created. She is one of the few true "Cajónistas" available in the UK!
