This Blu-Ray disc is a perfect introduction to the style and dance forms integral to flamenco. Vol I is aimed not only at the complete beginner with no experience of dance, but will also be useful for dancers established in other styles who wish to explore the fundamentals of flamenco style and rhythm.
Featuring accompaniment on both Spanish guitar and cajón (percussion box) the tutorials themselves are split into two sections:
The first part deals with the fundamentals of posture, incorporating basic style and technique with respect to foot movements. The way in which the flamenco dancer uses his or her feet to make the percussive sounds unique to this dance form are very different from other forms of dance.
The second part begins to incorporate arm and hand movements to the techniques mastered in Pt 1, and moves on to a practical demonstration of some of the most common rhythmic variations of flamenco (the compás), namely Soleáres, Alegrías and Bulerías. Finally, there is an opportunity to put what you have learned together into a complete section of choreography.
Sandra La Espuelita is known for her inspiring and charismatic teaching style. She gives workshops all over the UK, her claim to fame being when she taught Darren Gough flamenco on BBC TV's "Strictly Come Dancing"!
Please note that this disc is available in Blu-Ray format only, and will not play on conventional DVD players unless they are specifically compatible with this format (the disc will play on Sony PlayStation 3). Running time: 160mins.
